Yanchep Rail Extension: A Game-Changer for Perth’s Northern Suburbs
The Western Australian State Government has officially announced the much-anticipated launch of passenger train services on the Yanchep Rail Extension (YRE) on Monday, 15 July. This significant milestone marks a new era of connectivity and accessibility for residents in Perth’s rapidly growing northern suburbs.

The YRE extends the Joondalup Line by 14.5 kilometers northward from Butler, introducing three new stations in Alkimos, Eglinton, and Yanchep. In recent months, the YRE has undergone rigorous testing and commissioning phases to ensure its readiness for operation, including extensive driver training. The project’s scale is evident in the impressive statistics: 41,085 sleepers, 90,000 tonnes of ballast, and the construction of three innovative fauna bridges – a first for Western Australian railways.
The renaming of the existing Joondalup Line to the Yanchep Line reflects the extension’s significant impact on the region. With the new services, commuters can expect travel times of 49 minutes from Yanchep to Perth, 46 minutes from Eglinton to Perth, and 41 minutes from Alkimos to Perth.
The Yanchep Rail Extension is more than just a transportation project; it’s a catalyst for growth and development in Perth’s northern suburbs. By providing residents with convenient and efficient access to the city centre, the YRE will enhance quality of life, stimulate economic activity, and contribute to a more sustainable and connected community.
